How to Choose an Early Rider Kids' Bike

When choosing an Early Rider bike, the most important factors are your child's height, riding experience and where they will ride most often. The Early Rider range includes lightweight balance bikes and pedal bikes designed for different skill levels and riding needs. Choosing the right bike size helps children ride more comfortably and confidently.

What Are the Differences Between Early Rider Models?

Early Rider models differ in their design, wheel size and intended use:

  • Balance bikes. Designed for children learning to balance on two wheels. They have no pedals, allowing children to move forward by pushing off the ground with their feet.
  • Belter. Lightweight kids' bikes with a belt drive, suitable for everyday rides on paved surfaces and easy trails. The belt drive does not require chain oil.
  • Seeker. Kids' bikes designed for more adventurous riding on varied trails and uneven surfaces.
  • Hellion. Sporty mountain bikes for children, designed for more technical trails and active off-road riding.

What Should You Consider When Choosing an Early Rider Bike?

  • Bike size and geometry. Wheel size is a useful starting point, but the right fit also depends on your child's height, inseam length and the bike's geometry. Your child should be able to reach the handlebars comfortably and stop with confidence.
  • Bike weight. A lighter bike is generally easier for children to get moving, handle and manoeuvre, especially when learning to ride.
  • Drive system. Early Rider bikes use either belt or chain drives. Belt drives do not need lubrication and avoid oily chains, while chain drives are used on various sportier models.
  • Brakes and handling. Children should be able to reach and operate the brake levers comfortably. Brake systems may vary between models.

If you are unsure which Early Rider model or size to choose, the Velonova team can help you find a suitable bike based on your child's height, riding experience and needs.
