Electric mountain (MTB) bikes combine the off-road capability of a mountain bike with electric motor assistance. They are designed for forest trails, steeper climbs and more technical routes, while different e-MTB models can suit very different types of riding – from easier gravel roads to challenging mountain trails.
Which electric MTB should you choose?
Start by considering the types of routes you plan to ride. For easier forest roads, gravel tracks and everyday use, a simpler electric mountain bike may be sufficient. If you do not need electric assistance, a conventional mountain (MTB) bike may be a better choice. For technical trails, rocky terrain and steep descents, models with front and rear suspension provide greater control.
Full-suspension electric MTB bikes are generally more comfortable and help the wheels maintain better contact with uneven terrain. However, suspension type is not the only factor to consider – suspension travel, bike geometry, brakes and MTB tyres suited to your routes are also important.
Motor power and torque
Motor torque is particularly important on an electric mountain bike, as the additional assistance is most noticeable on steep climbs. However, a higher Nm figure does not always mean a more suitable bike. The natural feel of the assistance, system control and how well the motor is matched to the bike's intended use are equally important.
More powerful systems are generally chosen for challenging routes and stronger assistance on climbs, while lighter e-MTBs may use more compact motors and provide a more natural ride feel closer to that of a conventional mountain bike.
What battery capacity should you choose for an e-MTB?
A higher-capacity battery provides more energy for longer rides, but it can also increase the overall weight of the bike. Actual range depends on the terrain, assistance mode, rider weight, weather conditions and riding pace.
If you are planning long rides with plenty of climbing, a larger battery can be a significant advantage. For shorter or more sport-oriented rides, consider not only battery capacity but also the bike's overall weight and handling characteristics.
Specialized Turbo Levo, Levo SL or Tero?
Specialized Turbo Levo models are designed primarily for mountain trails and more challenging terrain. Turbo Levo SL models place greater emphasis on lower weight and a more natural ride feel, making them an interesting choice for riders who want electric assistance while retaining handling closer to that of a conventional MTB.
Specialized Turbo Tero is a more versatile electric bike family suitable not only for off-road routes but also for everyday riding and touring. When choosing between these models, the name is less important than selecting the version, geometry and specification that best match your planned routes.
